Holiday Shopping at the Alternative Gift Fair
The Holiday Edition Alternative Gift Fair, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on December 12 at the historic Irving Theater, in Indianapolis, will offer a unique experience to shop for local and handmade gifts for the holiday season. This year’s edition is hosted by Fatty Frog Pots, a handmade pottery company and one of the many vendors at the event.
The Alternative Gift Fair debuted in December 2007, when it was held at the Earth House Collective in downtown Indianapolis and was moved to cultural Irvington when the Earth House Collective closed. It has grown to offer 30 to 50 handmade local vendors, and occurs three times a year with a spring show in May before Mother’s Day; a summer show that coincides with the Irvington Folk Festival in June; and the December Holiday Gift Fair, which is the main show.
The event’s mission is to be “alternative” by providing local and handmade artistry gifts between every holiday so there are ways to support the local community and refrain from buying gifts at chain stores. It allows shoppers to experience the beauty created by local talent and discover lesser-known local businesses.
Admission is free; donations are accepted to support The PourHouse’s efforts to assist those facing homelessness this winter. Location: 5505 E. Washington St. For more information, visit ALTGiftFair.com.
