Letter from Publisher
“The gifts of…friendship, happiness, laughter, gratitude, contentment, memories, kindness, sharing, love, comfort, adventure, prosperity, and joy…”
A month ago, we jotted down these words to guide the theme of this month’s letter, envisioned as joint message from our family to yours as together we celebrate a joyous holiday season. Our goal was to share heartening words and thoughts of inspiration to light our way.
As we each embrace our many blessings during this special time of year, we are also aware it is a complicated and conflicted world in which we live. For the overwhelming majority of humanity, global peace is the gift we’d place at the top of our wish lists. Always, but especially in light of recent events, our simple and yet oh-so-challenging message aims to encourage each of us to find peace, make peace and keep peace in our daily thoughts, words and actions.
We were recently introduced to the teachings of Chade-Meng Tan—one of Google’s earliest engineers, and author of Search Inside Yourself: The Unexpected Path to Achieving Success, Happiness (and World Peace). Tan advocates the notion that expressing compassion for others is what brings happiness to oneself as well. Much of his attention is centered on mindfulness training, and leveraging useful mental habits to develop positive habits such as kindness, empathy and optimism.
One lesson in particular resonated with us and we are working to integrate it into our instinctual thought process. Imagine whenever you meet someone, or someone comes to mind—regardless of the circumstances of the relationship—you make your first thought, “I want you to be happy.” Do this for 10 seconds, repeating and feeling this thought, and sense what happens.
Tan believes this mental habit creates the conditions for compassion, and changes everything. Your sincere goodwill is unconsciously picked up by others, and will likely reflect back to you, creating a ripple effect of shared consciousness that can ultimately lead to world peace.
It’s so easy to be sidetracked from inner peace by a noisy, busy, evolving world—be it close to home, or on the world stage. As you read through these pages we hope you will find inspired ideas that enable you to embrace the spirit of the season, discover stillness and healing, and share blessings and gifts that have deep meaning for you.
From our Natural Awakenings of Indy family to you yours, we are thankful, and wish you joyous holidays, and many blessings for love and success in the New Year.
And on Earth, peace and goodwill to all,
Publisher Teona Wright and Associate Publisher Kimberly Miller
