Dr. Ted Reese: Indianapolis Dentistry
A positive experience with his own family dentist, combined with an interest in life sciences and biology, inspired Dr. Ted Reese, DDS, MAGD to decide on a career in dentistry in his youth. “My dentist gave me a good impression of the career, as he was always pleasant, happy and seemed to enjoy his work,” says the owner of Indianapolis Dentistry in Indianapolis.
By the end of dental school, Dr. Reese realized there were many facets of dentistry he found intriguing and rewarding, and throughout his career has focused on continuing education to provide a multidimensional practice for his patients. Over time, driven by a personal and professional desire to support whole body health, Dr. Reese pursued a holistic approach and education to dentistry.
Biological or Holistic Dentistry – also known as Whole Body Dentistry – is the delivery of dental care with an understanding and appreciation of the far-reaching effects the materials used have on our bodies and the importance of oral/dental health in promoting and sustaining a person’s systemic health. Recognizing and reducing the toxins and infections that can emanate from the mouth, which can be a precursor to heart disease, pre-diabetes and more, can allow the body to return to a healthy state.
Groups such as the Holistic Dental Association (HDA), the International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine (IABDM), and the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) are helping to change things by educating the public as well as practitioners on alternative approaches. With a shared premise that dental products and procedures affect the entire body, these organizations have established training programs, scientific studies, strict biological standards and yearly conferences for biological dentists.
Synchronizing dentistry with total body health requires providing the highest quality dental options and materials, which is why Dr. Reese chooses to offer his patients a mercury-safe, state-of-the-art dental facility. Some of his protocols include a high level of diligence in adhering to stringent guidelines in removing old mercury fillings to avoid any further contamination from this toxin.
While removing mercury amalgams, precautions are taken for both patient and staff. Layers of protection and equipment such as a small high-speed vacuum with intra oral suction to remove even the tiniest piece of dental amalgam and an amalgam separator are used to provide a mercury safe experience. Dr. Reese believes that mercury-free restorations should be an integral part of aligning oral health and whole body wellness.
“For the comfort of my patients, I constantly look to offer the healthiest, most reliable and minimally invasive tools and modalities as possible,” notes Dr. Reese. “I’ve come to realize and appreciate just how much our bodies want to heal themselves. We often just need to support that innate desire.” In addition to safe mercury removal, the practice offers such holistic dental services as low-radiation digital x-rays, flouride-free prevention and cleanings, and ozone dentistry.
A relatively progressive modality, ozone application and therapy has become a preferred technique in their dental practice. Ozone, when selectively applied, can provide significant benefits in dentistry to promote health without any toxic by-products. It has proven successful for disinfection purposes, in eliminating tooth sensitivity, treating early stage cavities and sterilizing infected teeth during root canal therapy.
Additional holistic dentistry services and products include TMJ/TMD therapy, snoring and mild sleep apnea treatment, supplements to support healthy detoxification, and homeopathics. Homeopathy is very successful in dentistry and is used by Indianapolis Dentistry to help patients alleviate anxiety and discomfort. “Our goal is to provide a comfortable, relaxing environment for our patients,” explains Dr. Reese. A combination of room ionizers, hepa air filters, essential oils and the identification of toxins all support this goal.
While striving to equip himself to teach his patients how oral health plays a key role in overall wellness, Dr. Reese also focuses on expanding the message of holistic dental care to colleagues and practitioners through continuing education opportunities. Speaking engagements, a comprehensive blog, seminars and workshops support his dedication to life long learning and contributions to his profession and whole body health. In 2015, he received Board Certifications in Integrative Biologic Dental Medicine from The American Board of Integrative Medicine and Dentistry, and a Naturopathic Doctor certification from the American Naturopathic Medical Certification Board.
Beyond our borders, an early experience in accompanying a church group to Haiti led to a career long quest to participate in medical-dental outreaches to impoverished communities. Dr. Reese has extended his message and practice through additional mission trips to Haiti, El Salvador, Central America, and Africa. His most recent trip, to El Salvador in 2015, provided an opportunity to sponsor five members of the Indianapolis Dentistry team to accompany and assist him in providing dental care.
“This has always been a rewarding and eye opening experience,” says Dr. Reese. “The trips have allowed for a greater appreciation of what we have here, and even more so,” he continues, “the opportunity to offer hope and help improve the quality of life for these needy, yet gracious people.”
Incorporating a personal commitment to his profession with leading edge innovations and protocols to support optimal oral and whole body health, Dr. Reese has built upon his experiences and training, to best help those he serves.
