Special Diet Holiday Meal: Ideas from Farmers’ Markets and Local Chefs’ Recipes

Planning to serve guests a bountiful feast can often be a challenge when feeding those with food sensitivities and special dietary restrictions. Whether your holiday table seats a guest that eats a plant-based or paleo diet, or has an allergy to gluten, the local Indianapolis’ food movement offers a plethora of options, with ingredients from local farmers’ markets as well as allergy-free recipes found in local chefs’ food blogs and cookbooks.

Imagine this year’s holiday spread: organic roasted root vegetables, salad with locally grown greens and vegetables, antibiotic-free meat with wild mushroom gravy, sourdough gluten-free artisan bread with local wildflower honey, along with kosher desserts and paleo treats. These are some of the foods the Indianapolis farmers’ markets provide, and they are more open this year than ever before.

At the Indy Winter Farmers’ Market, located in the Circle City Industrial Complex, you’ll find local mushrooms such as shitake and lion’s mane from Shamrock Farms, coffee from Bee Coffee Roasters, Artisano’s Oils and Spices, and Native Bread, a recently opened, gluten-free and artisan bread company.

Offering three gluten-free breads—Sourdough, Seeded Whole Grain Boule and Honey Oat Loaf—Native Bread uses ingredients completely free of egg, dairy, and gluten, and ancient grains for flour such as millet, sorghum, teff and gluten-free oats.

The Broad Ripple Midtown Winter Market, located inside the Bent Rail Brewery, offers the opportunity to shop and sip local beer from the brewery, and find foods for the paleo eater—a diet consisting of mostly meat and vegetables, free carbohydrates from grains and beans. Revival Treats offers paleo treats, and Red Frazier Bison offers bison steaks and local meats.

holiday treatsAt the JCC Farmers’ Market, open year round, you’ll find kosher baked goods, vegan soups and herbal vinaigrettes. Other markets include Normandy Farms producer-only, organic “Farm-to-Fork Market” located on the northwest side of Indianapolis, and the Fishers Farmers’ Market in the Billericay Park facility. New this year, the Fishers market will house approximately 20 vendors, featuring fresh vegetables, local goods and hot Mathoo’s egg rolls.

In addition to local foods for holiday spreads, local chefs and wellness coaches offer healthy allergy-free tasty recipes.

For fabulous chocolate dessert ideas, The Healthy Chocoholic, authored by Zionsville resident and health coach, Dawn Parker, offers a completely gluten-free cookbook with more than 60 recipes free of refined sugar and all ways to prepare foods with chocolate. It’s available on Amazon or Parker’s website and has everything from brownies to cookies, to hot chocolate, pies, and cakes.

For recipes strictly for plant-based eaters, local hormone health chef and coach, Allie McFee, offers a free 25 Raw Food Recipes ebook on her website, with entrees like tacos with walnut “meat,” and desserts such as chocolate pudding made from avocado and bananas.

Needing to offer food for a vegan family member without having to cook? Ezra’s Enlightened Café, Indianapolis’ first gluten-free and dairy-free restaurant, provides an abundance of raw food desserts from their “UnBakery” with a pumpkin pie made from sweet potato and cashews, and truffles made with chai spices and nuts.
