Letter from Publisher
Turning the calendar to a new year offers each of us an opportunity to assess our past, present and future, and to forward practical steps toward our hopes and dreams and spiritual progress. It can be a time of transition as we leave behind what no longer serves our own and others’ highest good.
Anticipating what 2017 will hold may elicit feelings from excitement about plans to trepidation about inevitable unknowns. Many may be happily anticipating a move to a new home, family births, marriages, expanded job opportunities, travel adventures or life passages.
This weekend, I shifted from anticipating writing this month’s letter to delivering a eulogy for a member of my extended family who passed away from disease during the holiday season. Kevin, who was just 57, faced his own set of challenges, as we all do, yet I can’t help but wonder why he chose to give such limited attention to his own self-care.
lends perspective to priorities. During the celebration services, we shared a poem by Michael Josephson called “Live a Life that Matters.” I’ve been thinking about how everything material disappears; it’s not what hold us up or grants our lives lasting meaning. Here is an excerpt;
So what will matter?
What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built;
not what you got, but what you gave.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion,
courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered
or encouraged others to emulate your example.
Living a life that matters doesn’t happen by accident.
It happens by choice.
We each make hundreds of choices every day defining who we are and wish to be, how we help or hinder others in their own journey; everyone is a work in progress. Each step we take in the direction of making decisions that honor others and ourselves is a step toward living life to the fullest.
This past year was a personally hard one for so many. Yet we still celebrated good news and the fact that we came through with our integrity intact. We are now recalibrating, setting the stage for 2017 with good intentions. Natural Awakenings will be here each month to support helpful intentions and decisions with actionable information and resources. We always aim to enlighten, inspire and motivate you to live the happiest and healthiest life possible throughout the this year.
