Reboot this Summer with Local Detox Plans

As June 21 marked the Summer Solstice, the warmest months are officially upon us. Longer days with sunshine invite opportunities to meet wellness goals from outdoor play and exercise in hiking, swimming and outside sports.
In addition to physical activity, partaking in a cleanse or detoxification protocol will help aid the body in rebooting the system in a nutritional standpoint.
For those with schedules that don’t allow time for cooking or prepping for a cleanse at home, Ezra’s Enlightened Café, the first gluten- and dairy-free café in Indianapolis, offers an Enlightened Meal Plan available for pickup for one to five days.
“Anytime is a good time to cleanse, but the start of summer can be particularly great because it’s a new season,” says owner Audrey Barron. “Our meal detox plan has a lot of plant-based and raw foods like juices and salads, and those foods fit in well with the warmer months since you don’t need to worry about eating warm broths to keep your internal temperature warm."
Ayurveda, an ancient Eastern medicine, advocates for eating raw, cooling foods, like cucumbers, mint, watermelon and coconut oil to help the body stay cool during the summer heat.
“Because it is summer, we are able to offer mostly local produce grown on our farm or from other great urban farmers. We pick our produce a couple of days before serving, so the nutrient content is higher.”
In addition, the meal plan consists of very low sugar levels.
“Sugar is the number one thing I would recommend for people to take out of their diet because it is so inflammatory; it affects every organ and every system,” adds Barron.
Excess sugar, especially from refined sugar and carbohydrates, can be a major contributor to candida, an overgrowth of yeast that occurs in the gut, mouth and genital tract, which contributes to intestinal pain, brain fog, and hormonal imbalances.
Dr. Lauren Montieth of the New Beginnings Family Wellness Center offers functional testing with her Gut Reboot Protocol to test if there are issues present such as candida overgrowth.
“The protocol assesses your digestive function and gut microbiome to see if there are candida or parasites, food sensitivities, leaky gut or an overgrowth of bacteria,” says Montieth. “It gives us a good picture of what’s going on specifically with people’s gut because every digestive tract is different.”
The Gut Reboot protocol is a 21-day program consisting of a series of food-elimination protocols, gut testing, recipes, guides such as a clean-friendly restaurants and weekly emails sent to the pOKatient.
“We have two options for our protocol: we work with people oneon-one with customized testing and meetups for accountability or we have an online program for the busy individual.”
Gut disorders have been linked as the root cause of a wide variety of conditions and symptoms, including autoimmune disorders, cancer, hormone imbalances, attention issues, depression, anxiety, allergies and asthma.
