Increase Self-Awareness to Beat Stress in the New Year

Jan 03, 2019 11:05AM

An eight-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) class, designed to help decrease stress and improve health and well-being taught by Scott Sweet, LCSW, LCAC, kicks off this month in Indianapolis. Classes will begin January 30 and 31 with two class options of 8:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays and 3:30 to 6 p.m. Thursdays. An all-day silent retreat will be held March 9.

Course orientations will be offered January 9, 10 and 16 at various times at Center- Point Counseling, in Indianapolis.

MBSR is a program founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn in the late 1970s to help individuals approach their health in a more mindful way. It has helped individuals with many conditions, including pain, chronic health issues, as well as stress, depression and anxiety. The premise of the program is to focus on the importance of staying in the present moment in order to increase one’s self-awareness and awareness of and interaction with one’s environment.

Benefits of MBSR include cultivating calm, maintaining perspective, bringing awareness to habits, creating a sense of spaciousness, noticing negative thoughts and their effects on stress, building up emotional and mental reserves for stressful times, and living in the present moment.

Fee: $425. Location: CenterPoint Counseling, Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 North Meridian St., Indianapolis. For more information or to register, call 317-252-5518, email [email protected] or visit
