Whole body health is achievable; it simply takes establishing and maintaining balance in the brain. And, for many, the journey to health begins with chiropractic care.
“The unvarnished truth of what chiropractors do is we have always been impacting the brain,” says Mary Grace Pennella, owner of Stillpoint Family Chiropractic, in Fishers. “The public knows us as great for back and neck pain, but the reality is the back is our access route to the nervous system, which is the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves.”
The brain is essentially the body’s hub of communications where feedback is relayed, Pennella says. When there are blockages in the nervous system, via peripheral nerves, the body isn’t able to function optimally, Pennella says. Likening it to a game of telephone, when messages are unable to reach the brain wholly and accurately, it is difficult for the body to heal and achieve maximum health.
Once blockages are cleared out through chiropractic adjustment, Pennella encourages clients to nurture their newfound balance and health with diet, exercise and mindfulness practices, she says.
“We work on your nervous system, but we help you figure out how to work on the rest of the parts,” she says. “If the brain is functioning well, the body should be functioning well as long as there is no interference; there should be complete happiness between the brain and body.”
Pennella says it’s not her style to push for big changes overnight. Instead, it comes down to making small, incremental changes in one’s lifestyle that can be managed over time with ease.
“In my office, I am the guinea pig,” she says. “If there is something that is going to be conveyed or suggested, I’ve used it myself. I’m not going to ask someone to do something I’m not willing to do myself.”
In addition to chiropractic adjustments, Stillpoint offers a variety of holistic health programs to its clients and their families, including nutritional counseling and sight and sound meditation, a form of restorative meditation.
Pennella says her passion for helping others is fueled by the opportunity to change lives. “The potential we can unlock is huge,” Pennella says. “It is between you and God, but I get to have an impact there. I get to turn your lights on, so you reflect more of the God who made you and that is an incredible gift. It lights me up.”
As Pennella and her staff work with and educate clients on their journey to balance and health, it becomes clear that everything both in the body and without is truly interconnected.
“We heal as a community,” Pennella says. “We grow as a community and we support one another as a community.”
