Freedom for a Day Program for Shelter Dogs

Indy Animal Care Services offers a program called Freedom for a Day for dogs who have spent more than 30 days at the shelter. The program allows individuals to pick up a qualifying dog for a day out on the town for exploration at a park, or a walk around downtown with the goal to get out of the shelter environment to socialize with people. The program began in March of this year, and has proved beneficial in helping dogs socialize and release energy by being in a different environment for the day. Some suggested dog-friendly destinations for these pups are Eagle Creek Park, Garfield Park, or the Monon Trail.

To take a dog out, bring a valid ID to the front desk of the shelter during regular business hours. Adoption counselors will point out which animals qualify for the program. After the day out, return the dog to the shelter no later than 5:30 pm that afternoon. In order to allow the dog as much time out of the kennel as possible, please arrive at the shelter to participate in the program by 2 pm.

Location: Indy Animal Care Services, 2600 S. Harding St., Indianapolis. For more information and program hours, visit Indy.gov/Activity/Freedom-for-a-Day or call 317-327-1397.
